What is an AC Evaporator Core?

Well, let’s start with the basics. Like, the super basics. AC stands for air conditioning. Hopefully, you knew that already.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the evaporator core, which is a really big part of your air conditioning system. How important is the AC evaporator core? Well, it’s the part of the air conditioning system that’s responsible for, you know, making the air cold. Or at least one of them. That seems like it might be an important thing, yeah?

So, how’s it work? Well, I won’t bother you with all the ins and outs, because, frankly, I don’t think you really care that much. But we’ll cover the basics. Liquid refrigerant is metered into the evaporator core by an expansion valve or orifice tube. Inside the evaporator, the refrigerant is transformed into a gas (hence the name evaporator). At the same time, the blower motor is pushing warm air across the evaporator. And because the evaporator is a heat exchanger, it absorbs the heat, keeping you cool.

And that’s how you keep from leaving sweat marks all over your nice car seats.

Evaporators are extremely durable, and you usually won’t ever have to replace yours. But, hey, you just never know what could go wrong.

Symptoms of a failing AC Evaporator Core

Air conditioner isn’t working

If your AC evaporator is busted, your air conditioning system doesn’t really have a way of producing cold air. Unless it’s a frigid day, and you turn on your fans, you simply won’t have a way of getting cold air into your cabin. The temperature of the air depends on how broken the AC evaporator is. If it’s just starting to go, you might still get some cold air, it will just be like a brisk spring day amount of cold, rather than dead of winter cold. If the AC evaporator is fully busted, then say goodbye to any level of cold air.

How urgent is an AC Evaporator Core replacement?

Well, that really depends. How important is air conditioning to you?

A busted AC evaporator isn’t going to make your car any less safe to drive. It’s just going to make it miserable on a hot day. Totally your choice.
