What Does the A12 Service Acura Mean?

A12  is a service code generated by your Acura’s Maintenance Minder, indicating it’s time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. In this case, it’s to change engine oil, oil filter, rotate the tires, and replace the engine air filter and the cabin air filter.

Here’s what the code means:

  • A: Oil and oil filter change
  • 1: Tires need rotating
  • 2: Replace the air filter element, cabin air filter, and check the drive belt

As the luxury arm of Honda, this code applies to all Acura and Honda vehicles. You can find the specific maintenance schedule in your Acura owners manual.

How To Fix an A12 Acura Service Code

1. Ensure Proper Lubrication With Oil and Filter Change

Routinely changing your car’s oil and oil filter goes a long way in protecting your engine. With time, engine oil breaks down and loses its ability to lubricate, dissipate heat, and prevent corrosion.

Your car’s oil filter will also lose its ability to clean the oil with time. To prevent this, many manufacturers recommend having your oil filter replaced every second time you go for an oil change.

Dirty engine oil can lead to increased fuel consumption, dirt build-up, and, with enough time, engine failure.

2. Rotate your Tires for Even Wear

As you drive, the front tires experience more wear than the rear tires since they’re typically responsible for most of your car’s acceleration and breaking.

Not regularly rotating your tires leads to uneven tire wear, which decreases traction and fuel economy and compromises road safety. It’s important to inspect the tire condition and rotate them every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

3. Replace Air Filters and Check the Drive Belt

Your car’s air filter ensures your engine receives clean air for combustion. You’ll need to replace the engine air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.

Doing so can help improve your engine performance and fuel efficiency and also extend your engine life.

Likewise, the cabin filter helps remove contaminants from the air you breathe inside your car. That’s why your cabin filter needs replacing every 15,000 to 30,000 miles.

While a drive belt should see anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000 miles, it’s important to check it every 20,000 or 30,000 miles. Driving with a damaged serpentine belt can lead to your engine overheating and losing power to your accessories.

When to go in For an A12 Acura Service

As a rule of thumb, you should have your oil life checked and a tire rotation done every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. But your Maintenance Minder system will let you know when it’s time for an A12 service.

A drive belt shouldn’t need as much maintenance, but having the mechanic check it during a service is a good idea.
