What Does the Honda A14 Service Mean?

The Honda Maintenance Minder system generates service codes like the A14 code to help you know when your Honda car needs a particular service.

The A14 code means that you need to:

  • A = Change engine oil
  • 1 = Rotate the tires and conduct general checks
  • 4 = Replace the spark plugs, timing belt, and get a water pump and valve clearance inspection

How Do You Fix a Honda A14 Service Code?

1. Change the Engine Oil

Engine oil in your Honda vehicle keeps the engine running smoothly by minimizing friction, heat, and wear. As it flows, engine oil gathers dirt and sludge, caught by the oil filter to prevent blockages.

However, engine oil deteriorates over time. Using dirty engine oil may lead to overheating and poor engine performance, so it needs to be changed after a certain period.

2. Rotate the Tires

As you drive, your tires experience different amounts of friction that wear out the tires unevenly. Rotating your tires can help balance out the wear and prolong tread life. Before swapping them, your mechanic should check their condition, tire pressure and look for any puncture holes.

3. Replace the Timing Belt

The timing belt (not to be confused with the serpentine belt) synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft, controlling valve timing. A worn timing belt or chain can cause ticking noises, and a broken one may lead to piston-valve collisions, resulting in severe engine damage.

4. Change the Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mix, powering your Honda’s engine. Over time, spark plugs wear out and must be replaced. Failing plugs lower engine performance and fuel efficiency when powering your Honda vehicle.

5. Inspect the Water Pump

The water pump is an essential component of your Honda’s cooling system. It moves coolant from the reservoir to the radiator and back. If the water pump fails, your engine will overheat.

6. Check the Valve Clearance

The valve clearance is the small space between the valve stem and the camshaft, and it must always be at a specific distance. To keep the distance accurate, you’ll need an occasional valve adjustment. During readjustment, your mechanic will clear off any debris blocking it.

When Should You Get a Honda A14 Service?

Generally, you should get this repair done when the service code pops up on your Maintenance Minder system. However, here’s an estimate of how often you should get individual routine maintenance:

  • Oil flush and tire rotation: Around 5,000 – 7,500 miles
  • Timing belt replacement: Every 60,000 – 100,000 miles
  • Spark plug replacement: Every 105,000 miles
  • Water pump replacement: Every 60,000 – 100,000 miles
  • Valve adjustment: Every 75,000 – 105,000 miles

Note: Driving habits, the type of engine oil, and the age of your Honda’s engine could affect these estimates. Always refer to your owner’s manual for more precise information.
