What Does the Honda B14 Service Mean?

A B14 Honda service code is one of the codes your Honda’s Maintenance Minder feature can display.

The B14 code means:

  • B = Replace engine oil and filter, check other systems (brakes, etc.)
  • 1 = Rotate the tires and conduct general checks
  • 4 = Replace spark plugs, timing belt, and inspect the water pump and valve clearance

This code applies to all Honda Motor Company vehicles, including the Honda Civic, Acura MDX, Honda Accord, or other Honda model types.

How Do You Fix a Honda B14 Service Code?

1. Get an Oil and Filter Change

Engine oil ensures engine parts run smoothly. Your oil filter catches and prevents dirt from entering the system. However, the filter can get clogged and lose its intended use, and your oil will expire, regardless.

2. Rotate the Tires

Your front and back tires experience different friction leading to uneven wear. Swapping the position of your Honda’s tires can help extend tread life beyond its intended use.

3. Replace the Timing Belt

The timing belt is responsible for precise valve timing. If the timing belt breaks, pistons and valves collide, ceasing engine performance (and adding an expensive bill for repairs).

4. Change the Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the fuel in your engine, causing it to roar to life. Having bad spark plugs can cause poor engine performance or misfires.

5. Inspect the Water Pump

Your Honda’s water pump ensures constant coolant flow through the engine and its parts. It directs coolant from the reservoir to the radiator and back. A faulty pump can cause engine overheating.

6. Check the Valve Clearance

The clearance needs to be at a specific distance from the camshaft. Over time, the distance could increase or get blocked by debris. A valve adjustment will reset the clearance distance and clean off any dirt.

When Should You Get a B14 Honda Service?

Normally it would be when your maintenance minder system comes on, but here’s a general maintenance schedule:

  • Oil flush and oil filter change: Every 5,000 – 7,500 miles
  • Tire rotation: Every 5,000 – 7,500 miles
  • Timing belt replacement: Every 7 years or 60,000 – 100,000 miles
  • Spark plug replacement: Every 7 years or 105,000 miles
  • Water pump replacement: Every 7 years or 60,000 – 100,000 miles
  • Valve adjustment: Every 75,000 – 105,000 miles

However, factors such as driving habits, the engine oil type, and the age of your Honda model can affect how often your visits would be.
